Ce SACD, que le label MDG consacre à Francesc Valls, confié à l’ensemble BachWerkVokal sous la direction de Gordon Safari, s’impose comme l’une des parutions baroques les plus stimulantes de ces derniers mois, révélant la vitalité, l’audace et la cohérence esthétique, avec une conviction rare, du corpus largement méconnu du maître catalan. Francesc Valls (1671-1747), figure majeure de la Barcelone du tournant des XVIIᵉ et XVIIIᵉ siècles, se montre profondément inventif avec une plume mêlant science contrapuntique, sensualité harmonique et un sens très personnel de la couleur vocale. Le programme puise dans le « Mapa armónico práctico » (1742), traité monumental où Valls expose sa pensée musicale tout en y intégrant de nombreuses compositions. Ce choix éditorial permet de saisir un créateur en pleine maîtrise de son art, capable de passer d’une écriture rigoureusement polyphonique à des élans expressifs presque opératiques. Les pièces retenues frappent par leur variété ; motets d’une grande densité, pages plus intimes où les voix dialoguent avec une délicatesse chambriste, éclats jubilatoires où l’architecture sonore se déploie avec une liberté surprenante pour l’époque. L’Ensemble BachWerkVokal se montre idéal dans ce répertoire. Le chœur, d’une homogénéité exemplaire, sait allier transparence et densité, donnant à chaque ligne sa place sans jamais sacrifier la dynamique globale. Le format SACD met particulièrement en valeur la richesse des résonances, la précision des attaques et la profondeur du chœur. Cette musique retrouve enfin une voix, une présence, une urgence presque contemporaine.

This SACD, which the MDG label has dedicated to Francesc Valls, entrusted to the BachWerkVokal ensemble under the direction of Gordon Safari, stands out as one of the most stimulating baroque releases of recent months, revealing the vitality, audacity, and aesthetic coherence, with rare conviction, of the largely unknown corpus of the Catalan master. Francesc Valls (1671-1747), a major figure in Barcelona at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, shows himself to be profoundly inventive, combining contrapuntal skill, harmonic sensuality and a highly personal sense of vocal color. The program draws on the Mapa armónico práctico (1742), a monumental treatise in which Valls expounds his musical thinking while incorporating numerous compositions. This editorial choice allows us to appreciate a creator in full command of his art, capable of moving from rigorously polyphonic writing to almost operatic bursts of expression. The selected pieces are striking in their variety: densely textured motets, more intimate passages where the voices dialogue with chamber-like delicacy, jubilant bursts where the sound architecture unfolds with a freedom surprising for the period. The BachWerkVokal Ensemble is ideal for this repertoire. The choir, with its exemplary homogeneity, combines transparency and density, giving each line its place without ever sacrificing the overall dynamic. The SACD format particularly highlights the richness of the resonances, the precision of the attacks, and the depth of the choir. This music finally regains a voice, a presence, an almost contemporary urgency.
