"Jacqueline" est un opéra minimaliste pour soprano (Marnie Breckenridge) et violoncelle (Matt Haimovitz) relatant la lutte de la célèbre musicienne, Jacqueline du Pré, contre sa maladie, la sclérose en plaques. La compositrice Luna Pearl Woolf, et le librettiste Royce Vavrek, lauréat du prix Pulitzer, retracent l’évolution d’un grand prodige et, finalement, d’une grande tragédie. Raconté en quatre mouvements – I. Naissance de l’étoile ; II. Super Nova ; III. Météorite ; IV. Impact – l’opéra fait référence aux souvenirs personnels de son compagnon d’infortune, le violoncelle. Parfois drôle, crue, joyeuse et finalement audacieuse, la forme de l’œuvre fait écho à l’interprétation emblématique du célèbre Concerto pour violoncelle d’Edward Elgar, utilisant la structure en quatre mouvements de l’œuvre pour naviguer dans une vie musicale où la passion est omniprésente. Cette interprétation possède la force du théâtre et la délicatesse des sentiments intérieurs, pour une évocation humaine des plus poignantes.

Jacqueline is a minimalist opera for soprano (Marnie Breckenridge) and cello (Matt Haimovitz) recounting the struggle of the celebrated musician, Jacqueline du Pré, against her illness, multiple sclerosis. Composer Luna Pearl Woolf and Pulitzer Prize-winning librettist Royce Vavrek trace the evolution of a great prodigy and, ultimately, a great tragedy. Told in four movements—I. Birth of the star; II. Super Nova; III. Meteorite; IV. Impact—the opera refers to the personal memories of its companion in misfortune, the cello. At times funny, crude, joyous and ultimately audacious, the work’s form echoes the iconic performance of Edward Elgar’s famous Cello Concerto, using the work’s four-movement structure to navigate a musical life where passion is omnipresent. This interpretation has the force of drama and the delicacy of inner feelings, for a most poignant human evocation.
