Here is the world première recording of the Concertos for Cello and Symphonies by Carl Friedrich Abel (1723-1787) and Christian Ernst Graf (1723-1804), two composers born the same year. Abel was a gambist before becoming a member of Dresden court orchestra “that Hass directed at that time; he remained there until 1758, when he undertook trips that would take him to London the following year. The recitals he gave were very well received, and when J.C. Bach moved to London in 1762, they inaugurated a famous series of subscription concerts which lasted until 1781. The following year, Abel went to Germany but then returned to England. His excessive penchant for alcohol led him to a premature death” (Denis Arnold). The program thus revolves around the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in three movements by Graf and the Concertos for Cello and Orchestra N°1 and N°2, as well as the Symphonies N°1 and N°3 by Abel. The Arpa Festante ensemble, under the direction of Christoph Hess, playing on period instruments, invigorates these worthy works of which the freshness of inspiration isn’t the least of their qualities. With delicacy and fervor, the musical discourse deployed does not exclude lightness, and the cellist Klaus-Dieter Brandt dominates the contours. Here is an SACD to absolutely discover.
