Les Etudes tableaux de Sergei Rachmaninov se déclinent en deux recueils, l’opus.33 et L’opus.39. André Lischke précise : « Au départ, Rachmaninov n’a cependant proposé aucun prétexte visuel, aucun « programme » à ces pièces. Toutefois, lorsqu’en 1930 Respighi s’adressa à lui avec l’intention d’orchestrer cinq Etudes-tableaux (op.33 n°7, Op.39 n°2, 6, 7, 9) Rachmaninov accepta de donner « quelques explications concernant les mystères des intentions de l’auteur » ». Les Préludes, quant à eux, sont au nombre de 24 et se partagent également en deux recueils Op.23 et Op.32. Sviatoslav Richter joue les Etudes-Tableaux Op.33 n°9, 5, 6 et Op.39 n°1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, ainsi que les Préludes Op.23 n°1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 7 et Op.32 n°2, 1, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12. Comme le rapporte Pierre-Emile Barbier : « Chaque Saison, Richter mettait à son répertoire quelques pages pour piano seul de Rachmaninov, jamais d’intégrales qu’il abhorrait. Avant lui, seul Vladimir Sofronitzky a risqué une telle modernité d’approche ». Bref, un maitre-disque à n’en pas douter.

The Painting-Studies by Sergei Rachmaninov count two collections, the Opus 33 and Opus 39. André Lischke states: “At first, Rachmaninov proposed no visual pretext, no “program” for these pieces.
