The Symphonies of Robert Schumann by the great pianist Christian Zacharias are a most thrilling musical experience. The second volume proposed here includes Symphony N°1 “Spring” and N°3 “Rhenish.” With a clear sense of narration uplifted by a musical discourse that privileges breath and song, Zacharias subjugates and renews our listening experience of these scores, which so often are played in a style of soulless romantic pathos. “I believe that it is best that he compose for the orchestra,” said Clara Wieck, “for, the piano restricts his imagination too much.” Having written four symphonies, the German composer is here celebrated as he should be by a pianist/conductor who is inspired, offering the chosen works insatiable joy. Music lovers take note!
