Cela fait du bien de retrouver Günter Wand, un grand chef d’orchestre ici au festival Schleswig-Holstein en 1990. Günther Wand, discret, peu avide de publicité, travaillant en profondeur, a été chef d’orchestre pendant soixante dix ans puisqu’il commença sa carrière à vingt ans en 1932 comme chef de chant à Wuppertal. C’est à soixante-dix ans qu’il fut appelé au pupitre de l’orchestre symphonie de la NDR. Tous ces concerts ont été enregistrés au festival de musique de Schleswig-Holstein, le 24 juin 1990 et le 28 août 1999 pour Bruckner. Il n’y a pas de grande surprise dans ces interprétations et ce n’est pas cela qui doit passionner le mélomane au premier abord mais le travail d’orfèvre qu’effectue Günther Wand. Il montre la quasi absolue maîtrise de son art ainsi que la passion qu’il insuffle à ses musiciens. Je revois distinctement l’incroyable ferveur, par exemple, qui balaye l’orchestre dans cette quatrième symphonie de Bruckner. L’émotion est palpable. Belle limpidité et transparence au passage, et il faut saluer le très beau travail de chaque musicien. La captation vidéo est classique mais soignée et c’est Hugo Käch qui en a effectué la réalisation. L’homogénéité est évidente. Voilà un DVD de toute beauté et de référence qui ravira non seulement les passionnés de Günther Wand mais également tous ceux qui s’intéressent à la direction d’orchestre.

What a pleasure to rediscover the great conductor Günther Wand at the Schleswig-Holstein festival in 1990. Having begun his career in 1932 as a vocal coach in Wuppertal at the age of twenty, Günther Wand, discrete, not fond of publicity, working in depth, was a conductor for seventy years. It was at the age of seventy that he was asked to direct the Symphonic Orchestra of the NDR. All of these concerts were recorded at the music festival of Schleswig-Holstein on June 24, 1990 and August 28, 1999. There are no great surprises in these interpretations, and it is not that that will fascinate music lovers upon listening, but rather the careful and minutious work he undertook. He demonstrates nearly absolute mastery of his art as well as the passion he breathed into his musicians. One can distinctly see the incredible fervor, for example, that swept the orchestra in this Fourth by Bruckner. The emotion is palpable. With great clarity and transparency, each musician must be saluted. The video, directed by Hugo Käch, is classic but well-done. Its homogeneity is evident. Here is a DVD of great beauty – a reference – that will thrill admirers of Günther Wand, but also all those who are interested in orchestral conducting.
