Ma patrie

Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Rafael Kubelik (dir)

EuroArts 2072388, Harmonia Mundi Distribution

My Country

Recorded in Munich in 1984, this interpretation by the famous Czech Rafael Kubelik is well worth a listen. Moreover, it is rather pleasant to return to the past in order to look at Rafael Kubelik at his peak. Here is a conductor who is discreet but exemplary, something in need of today. He is totally involved. Affable, smiling and serene, he is more and more serious the more he conducts. Sweating abundantly in order to allow the orchestra to attain its best, he attains his best. Which is hardly a surprise, and the listener must recall his prodigious accomplishments in Mahler’s symphonies (Deutstch Grammophon). He manages here, in this nationalist work, to give it real flesh and undeniable refinement. In return, the orchestra gives him complete clarity and a natural tone. The trick is to achieve such ease in exuding the impression that all is so easy, so undemanding. Here is a must-have DVD for those who love this work as interpreted by a master. If only there were more of his ilk.
