La mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig, chanteuse d’exception, est née en 1928 à Berlin et s'est illustrée, depuis la fin des années 1940 jusqu'au début des années 1990, aussi bien dans l'opéra que dans les lieder. Elle fit ses débuts à l'âge de 18 ans, interprétant le rôle du prince Orlovsky dans l'opérette La Chauve-Souris en 1946, sur la scène de l'opéra de Francfort-sur-le-Main, où elle chanta jusqu'en 1952. De 1952 à 1954, elle travailla à l'opéra de Darmstadt puis, durant la saison 1954-1955, au Staatsoper de Hanovre. En 1954, elle se produisit pour la première fois au festival de Salzbourg, sous la direction de Karl Böhm, interprétant le rôle de Chérubin dans Les Noces de Figaro. En 1966, c'est le festival de Bayreuth qui lui ouvrit ses portes, dans des représentations de Tristan et Isolde, où elle jouait le rôle de Brangäne. Sa carrière internationale prit son essor en 1959, avec ses débuts américains sur la scène du Lyric Opera of Chicago, comme interprète de Dorabella dans Cosi fan tutte. La même année, elle interpréta à nouveau Chérubin au Metropolitan Opera de New York et ne cessa de se produire sur cette scène prestigieuse jusqu'en 1990. Les deux DVD qui lui rendent hommage se répartissent pour l’un, au cycle de lieder fort célèbre Le Voyage d’hiver de Franz Schubert et pour le second à des lieder de Franz Schubert, Hugo Wolf, Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss et Leonard Bernstein (avec le pianiste Charles Spencer). Beau programme. Et il faut avouer que si Christa Ludwig n’a plus la suavité de ses belles et glorieuses années, elle possède encore tous ses moyens vocaux. Cela force et l’admiration et le respect tant elle arrive à insuffler une passion incroyable dans tel ou tel lieder, par son émotion, la tessiture de sa voix, certes parfois un peu fatiguée, mais… Il y a quelque chose de très émouvant dans cette voix. Tout n’est pas parfait et on pourrait trouver à critiquer, mais on ne peut pas en dire autant de beaucoup de monde. Réparties sur les deux DVD, nous avons également droit à deux parties d’une Master Class avec Christa Ludwig.

Quite a program! Although Christa Ludwig no longer has the delicious smoothness of her peak years, she still has all her vocal wherewithal. She commands both our admiration and respect by breathing incredible passion into one or another lieder, by her emotion and the range of her voice, which does at times sound a bit worn, but still… There is something very moving in this voice. All is not perfect and some might be critical, but most do not come close to her. The set also offers a master class by Christa Ludwig divided over the two DVDs.
