Ce petit bijou de musicalité, à la rigueur interprétative exemplaire, nous vient de Suède. Le compositeur finlandais, Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) est ici représenté par trois de ses œuvres orchestrales les plus connues : "Karelia Suite" Op.11, en trois mouvements, "Rakastava" Op.14, en trois parties et "Lemminkäinen" Op.22 (Quatre Légendes tirées du Kalevala). Née en 1969 à Helsinki, Susanna Mälkki débute comme violoncelliste avant d’étudier la direction d’orchestre avec Jorma Panula, Eri Klas et Leif Segerstam à l’Académie Sibelius. De 1995 à 1998, elle est premier violoncelle de l’Orchestre symphonique de Göteborg. En 2004, Susanna Mälkki dirige l’Ensemble intercontemporain au Festival de Lucerne dans un programme entièrement consacré à Harrison Birtwistle. Elle est alors nommée directrice musicale l’année suivante. En mars 2007, elle dirige également le concert anniversaire des trente ans de l’Ensemble aux côtés de Pierre Boulez et de Peter Eötvös. Dans cet enregistrement, la palette de couleurs qui émane de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Helsinki, n’est pas le fruit du hasard. Le travail au cordeau de Susanna Mälkki fait mouche, en offrant une des plus belles captations de ces dernières années.

This small jewel of musicality, whose interpretative exactitude is exemplary, comes from Sweden. The Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) is here represented by three of his most well-known orchestral works: “Karelia Suite” Op.11, in three movements, “Rakastava” Op.14, in three partes, and “Lemminkäinen” Op.22 (Four Legends from the Kalevala). Born in 1969 in Helsinki, Susanna Mälkki started out as a cellist before studying conducting with Jorma Panula, Eri Klas and Leif Segerstam at the Sibelius Academy. From 1995 to 1998, she was the first cellist for the Göteborg Symphonic Orchestra. In 2004, Susanna Mälkki lead the Ensemble Intercontemporain at the Lucerne Festival in a program entirely devoted to Harrison Birtwistle. She was then named musical director the following year. In March 2007, she also lead the anniversary concert for the thirty years of the Ensemble along with Pierre Boulez and Peter Eötvös. In this recording, the pallet of colors coming from the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra is not by accident. Susanna Mälkki’s straightforward direction hits the bull’s eye by offering one of the most magnificent recordings of the past few years.
