"Alcina" est un opéra en trois actes de Haendel (1685-1759) sur un livret d’Antonio Marchi d’après "Roland Furieux" de l’Arioste (1516). Il fut créé à Londres en 1735 et relate l’histoire suivante : La magicienne Alcina, après avoir fait tomber en son pouvoir le chevalier Ruggiero s’en éprend elle-même, perdant ainsi sa puissance surnaturelle. La fiancée de Ruggiero, Bradamante vient le secourir, déguisée en homme, et Alcina est ainsi vaincue. Magdaléna Kozena (mezzo-soprano), Erin Morley (soprano), Anna Bonitatibus (mezzo-soprano), Elizabeth DeShong (Mezzo-soprano) et Alois Mühlbacher (contreténor) sont les principaux protagonistes de ce drame enchanteur mené de mains de maître par Marc Minkowski et son ensemble Les Musiciens du Louvre. C’est très jeune (19 ans) que Marc Minkowski aborde la direction d’orchestre et fonde Les Musiciens du Louvre, ensemble qui prend une part active au renouveau baroque, et avec lequel il défriche le répertoire français et Haendel, avant d’aborder Mozart, Rossini, Offenbach et Wagner. Souvent donné sur la scène internationale, "Alcina" trouve ici, une nouvelle fois, un souffle qui semble ne pas vouloir se tarir. L’engagement du chef français s’épanouit au cœur d’un discours musical soutenu, menant à l’accomplissement vocal. Une belle réussite.

“Alcina” is an opera in three acts by Haendel (1685-1759) with a libretto by Antonio Marchi based on “Roland Furieux” by Arioste (1516). It premiered in London in 1735 and tells the following story: The magician Alcina, after having cast her spell on the cavalier Ruggiero, herself falls in love with him, thereby losing her supernatural power. Ruggiero’s fiancée, Bradamante, comes to his rescue when she disguises herself as a man, and Alcina is thus beaten. Magdaléna Kozena (mezzo-soprano), Erin Morley (soprano), Anna Bonitatibus (mezzo-soprano), Elizabeth DeShong (mezzo-soprano) and Alois Mühlbacher (countertenor) are the main protagonists of this enchanting drama masterfully conducted by Marc Minkowski and his group Les Musiciens du Louvre. It was at the tender age of 19 that Marc Minkowski founded Les Musiciens du Louvre and took over its direction. The ensemble actively contributed to the Baroque revival, and it gave new life to the French repertoire and Haendel, before trying their hand on Mozart, Rossini, Offenbach and Wagner. Often performed internationally, “Alcina” here once again finds inspiration that doesn’t seem to run dry. The French conductor’s dedication blossoms into a musical discourse that is constant and that leads to vocal perfection. This is quite an achievement.
