Respighi tenta tout à la fois d’endiguer les débordements du vérisme triomphant, de renouer avec les plus nobles traditions musicales de son pays (vieux modes du plain-chant, notamment), tout en créant une sorte d’art mélangeant post-romantisme et impressionnisme, voire néo-classicisme". L’enregistrement que nous avons entre les mains se concentre uniquement sur ses lieder (Deltà Silvane, In alto mare, Contrasto, L’ultima ebbrezza, Abbandono, Stornellatrice, Cinque canti all’antica, Stroria breve, Nel giardino, Pioggia, Lagrime, Quattro arie scozzesi, O falce di luna calante, Notturno, Nebbie) dont la sensibilité est omniprésente. Le ténor Timothy Fallon et le pianiste Ammiel Bushakevitz en sont les parfaits représentants, pour une heure de chant inspiré.
