“Color” in the singular is the title of this remarkable SACD. But, clearly it is not the only color in this program prepared with pertinence and intelligence: Mel Bonis (1858-1937) with his Sonata for Flute and Piano in four movements, Claude Debussy (1862-1918) and excerpts from the songs of Bilitis (To Invoke Pan, God of the Summer Wind, In Order That the Night Be Propitious, For the Dancer with Pit Vipers, To Thank the Morning Rain), André Caplet (1878-1925) with Two Pieces for Flute and Piano (Dreams, Small Waltz), Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) and his Sonatina for Flute and Piano, Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) with his Romance for Flute and Piano, and to conclude the fascinating musical journey, Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) and his Suite for Flute and Piano. Here is a demanding program if there ever was one, but one which is thrilling from one note to the next in which Maria Cecilia Munoz and Tiffany Butt offer their best in an interpretation placed under the sign of undeniable commitment. Everything here breathes music, and only music. Which is in itself a lot.
