Avec cette parution, le Quatuor Escher signe une des plus belles réalisations discographiques en SACD. Partagé entre trois compositeurs, le programme propose le Quatuor à cordes N°12 en fa majeur « Américain » Op.96 d’Antonin Dvorak dont la composition fut bouclée en seize jours à peine, le Quatuor à cordes N°1 en ré majeur Op.11 de Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, « premier grand quatuor écrit par un compositeur russe » souligne Jean-Alexandre Ménétrier, et le Quatuor à cordes N°2 en ré majeur d’Alexandre Borodine qui « fut conçu, nous dit Pierre-Emile Barbier, comme un présent du compositeur à son épouse, à l’occasion du vingtième anniversaire de leur mariage. Il fut donc écrit dans un état de concentration qu’on ne connaissait guère au professeur Borodine, musicien du dimanche ». Le Quatuor Escher (Adam Barnett-Hart et Aaron Boyd aux violons, Pierre Lapointe à l’alto, Brook Speltz au violoncelle) dégage une palette d’émotion de chaque instant, offrant à la fois coloris enchanteurs, équilibres parfaits et phrasés subtiles. L’ensemble est un véritable enchantement, tout simplement.

With this release, the Escher Quartet has signed one of its best releases on SACD. Divided between three composers, the program proposes the String Quartet N°12 in F major “American,” Op.96 by Antonin Dvorak which took sixteen days in all to write, the String Quartet N°1 in D major Op.11 by Piotr Ilych Tchaikovsky, “the first great quartet written by a Russian composer,” states Jean-Alexandre Ménétrier, and the String Quartet N°2 in D major by Alexandre Borodine which “was conceived,” writes Pierre-Emile Barbier, “as a present from the composer to his wife on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of their marriage. It was thus written in a state of concentration that is hardly recognizable for Professor Borodine, a Sunday musician.” The Escher Quartet (Adam Barnett-Hart and Aaron Boyd on violins, Pierre Lapointe on viola, Brook Speltz on cello) display a palette of emotion at each instant, offering both enchanting colors, perfect balance, and subtle phrasing. This ensemble is, quite simply, a true bewitchment.
