Stephen Marchionda (guitare)

MDG 903 2009- 6, Socadisc Distribution

The program of this SACD regroups transcriptions for guitar of works for piano of the Spanish composer Enrique Granados (1867-1916), and notably the “Danzas Espanolas” Op.37, “La Maja de Goya,” “El Mira de la Maja,” and “Ochos valses poéticos.” The guitarist Stephen Marchionda tell us, in his text presentation that “it was the famous Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha, a direct musical descendant of Granados, who made “Dansas Espanolas” (among other works) famous abroad. After, Granados’ students, first Frank Marschall then Alicia de Larrocha, continued this “oral tradition” of playing, recording and teaching the revisions made by Granados to his works published in their original version.” Before adding that “it is in this tradition that the guitar transcriptions presented here are exclusively the scores for piano as published, all the while recognizing the influence of the interpretation of Alicia de Larrocha.” Stephen Marchionda deploys undeniable inspiration and elevates works which are remarkable on many fronts. In short, here is a well-made SACD that is quite simply indispensable.
