In a sound recording that is remarkable for its precision, presence and power (perhaps what is best done today in sound recording, a declining art, both for SACD and Blu-ray Pure Audio), this recording proposes three Nordic composers. The Norwegian first, Edvard Grieg, with his Sonata for Violin and Piano N°3 in C minor Op.45 dating from 1887; the Finn next, Jean Sibelius, with his “Country Danses” Op.106; and finally the Dane, Carl Nielsen, with his Sonata for Violin and Piano N°1 in A major Op.9. “Dating from 1895, that is an era when Nielsen began to detach himself from classicism, composed his First Symphony, and had also discovered Brahms, the Sonata N°1 is a work which is brilliant and vigorous which, in effect, owes much to Brahms’ writing,” specifies François-René Tranchefort. The duo of musicians here present, Ragnhild Hemsing on the violin and Tor Espen Aspaas on the piano, is a wonderful discovery. As part of a musical discourse of rare energy, their respective playing engenders emotion at each moment: vibrant, with determination, and fitting respiration. As such, pleasure is before us in what is, quite simply, most human.
