Dernier grand guitariste autrichien de l’époque viennoise, Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856) fut un compositeur exigeant pour son instrument de prédilection, la guitare. Le présent enregistrement d’une facture éditoriale pertinente, avec un texte de présentation des plus fouillés signé Frank Bungarten, est en tout point remarquable. Ce dernier précisant par ailleurs : « Avec le présent enregistrement, nous proposons pour la première fois depuis l’époque de Johann Kaspar Mertz sa musique sur une guitare identique à celle qu’il utilisait ». L’instrument qu’il utilise est la copie récente d’une guitare à dix cordes signée Gary Southwell datant de 2013, d’après Johann Gottfried Scherzer de 1861.
