Avec cette parution exemplaire, le label Praga Digitals rend un hommage mérité au pianiste disparu en 2000, Friedrich Gulda. Ce dernier fut un virtuose adulé qui n’hésitait pas à jouer l’intégrale des sonates pour piano de Beethoven en concert. « Dans son refus de tout enseignement, de tout a priori plus ou moins lié à la tradition, c’est-à-dire, pour lui, au subjectivisme, son jeu s’efforce de rechercher la sobriété et la pure objectivité. Ses compositions les plus marquantes sont surtout les cadences (lorsqu’il ne les improvise pas sur place) qu’il a écrites pour les concertos de Mozart » (dictionnaire des interprètes – Robert Laffont). Le programme de ce SACD stéréo, remasterisé d’après les bandes originales datant des années 1956, 1957 et 1969, se partage les œuvres de trois compositeurs. Carl Maria von Weber et son Konzertstück Op.79 pour piano et orchestre que dirige Volkmar Andreae, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart et son Concerto pour piano et orchestre N°9 K.271, et Richard Strauss avec Burleske pour piano et orchestre datant de 1890. Karl Böhm dirigeait alors le Wiener Philharmoniker. Une aubaine pour tous les mélomanes amateurs d’interprétations essentielles.

With this exemplary release, the label Praga Digitals pays tribute to the pianist Friedrich Gulda, who died in 2000. He was an adulated virtuoso who did not hesitate to play Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas in concert. “In his refusal of all teaching, of any a priori related to tradition, meaning subjectivism, his playing sought to find sobriety and pure objectivity. His most striking compositions are above all the cadenzas (when he didn’t improvise on the spot) he wrote for Mozart’s concertos” (Dictionary of Interpreters – Robert Laffont).
