La Symphonie N°13 « Babi Yar » pour basse, chœur de basses et orchestre en si bémol mineur Op.113 de Dimitri Chostakovitch, fut créée à Moscou en 1962 avec le chef Kirill Kondrachine et la basse Vitaly Gromadski que nous retrouvons sur l’enregistrement présent. Elaborée sur cinq poèmes de Evgeni Evoutchenko (Babi yar, L’humour, Au magasin, les Terreurs, la Carrière) l’œuvre « tient autant de la symphonie que de la cantate en plusieurs mouvements, ou encore de la suite vocale » souligne André Lischke. La Cantate « Octobre » Op.74 de Prokofiev fut composée en 1937 pour célébrer le 20ème anniversaire de la Révolution. C’est donc les protagonistes de la création de la symphonie de Chostakovich que nous retrouvons sur ce SACD admirable, dans un rendu sonore des plus précieux, issu du traitement des bandes originales. Encore une fois, c’est un bonheur renouvelé que de redécouvrir ces enregistrements légendaires dans de telles conditions. Un grand merci au label Praga Digitals.

The Symphony N°13 “Babi Yar” for bass, bass chorus, and orchestra in B flat minor Op.113 by Dimitri Chostakovitch was premièred in Moscow in 1962 with the conductor Kirill Kondrachine and the bass Vitaly Gromadski, whom we hear on the present recording. Based on five poems by Evgeni Evoutchenko (Babi yar, Humor, At the Store, Terrors, the Career), the work “is both a symphony and cantata in several movements, or better yet a vocal suite,” states André Lischke. The Cantata “October” Op.74 by Prokofiev was composed in 1937 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Revolution. It is thus the protagonists of the creation of the Chostakovich symphony that we find on this admirable SACD, in an extremely fine restoration based on the master tapes.
