Après des enregistrements Mozart plus que remarquables, le pianiste chef d’orchestre Christian Zacharias propose une sélection des Symphonies de Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Il s’agit en l’occurrence de six symphonies écrites durant la période berlinoise du compositeur, comme l’explique Tobias Schwinger : « Les symphonies Wq 173 à Wq 181 virent le jour durant la période où Bach était occupé à Berlin (1740/41-1768) comme claveciniste à la chapelle de la cour du roi Frédéric II, et était particulièrement apprécié pour ses compositions de musique instrumentale. Il s’intéressait principalement aux œuvres pour clavecin, aux concertos et à la musique de chambre. En comparaison avec le grand nombre d’œuvres qu’il écrivit dans ces domaines, le nombre des symphonies composées entre 1741 et 1762, huit en tout (six d’entre elles sont présentées ici), est relativement peu élevé ». Sous la baguette inspirée de Christian Zacharias, l’orchestre de chambre de Lausanne délivre de beaux coloris dans un équilibre instrumental des plus rigoureux. Bref, une réussite précieuse, tant au niveau artistique qu’au niveau sonore, avec un judicieux respect des timbres en présence.

After his Mozart recordings which were remarkable to say the least, the pianist and conductor Christian Zacharias is proposing a selection of symphonies by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, namely the six symphonies written during the composer’s Berlin period. As Tobias Schwinger explains: “The symphonies Wq 173 to Wq 181 came to be during the period when Bach was busy in Berlin (1740/41-1768) as harpsichordist for the chapel of King Frédéric II’s court, and he was particularly appreciated for his composition of instrumental music. He was principally interested in works for the keyboard, concertos, and chamber music. Compared to the high number of works he wrote in these domains, the number of symphonies composed between 1741 and 1762, eight in all (of which six are presented here), is relatively small.” Under Christian Zacharias’ inspired baton, the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra delivers beautiful colors with highly rigorous instrumental balance. In short, this is a most worthy success, both on the artistic level and insofar as the sound recording, with judicious respect for the tones it contains.
