Enregistrée en concert en juillet 2011 à l’Abbaye de Fontfroide durant le VIème Festival de Musique et Histoire pour un Dialogue Interculturel, cette Messe en si mineur de Jean-Sébastien Bach est présentée ici à la fois en DVD et en SACD. Réalisé avec une grande finesse par Andy Sommer, le film de la représentation trouve le chemin d’une parfaite osmose entre images et musique. Car l’œuvre de Bach ne peut se satisfaire de compromis visuels. « Aborder la Messe en si mineur, souligne Jordi Savall, est un véritable défi pour tout interprète car l’immense dimension spirituelle et esthétique de cette œuvre et son parfait équilibre entre virtuosité, émotion, pureté et éloquence atteignent des niveaux de langage musical extrêmes qui la situent dans la dimension la plus élevée comme la plus universelle jamais atteinte par l’homme. Cette œuvre résume le savoir de toute une vie, dans laquelle le passé (stile antico) et le présent (barocco et galante) se combine pour faire entrevoir le futur d’un langage musical véritablement universel et transcendant ». Le second DVD accompagnant l’enregistrement nous fait découvrir les artistes en présence ainsi qu’une interview de Jordi Savall sur l’œuvre de Bach notamment.

Recorded live in July 2011 in the Fontfroide Abbey during the 6th Festival of Music and History for an Intercultural Dialogue, this Mass in B minor by Jean-Sebastian Bach is presented here both on DVD and SACD. Directed with great finesse by Andy Sommer, the film of the performance is a perfect osmosis of image and music. For, Bach’s work cannot tolerate any visual comprise. “To tackle the Mass in B minor,” states Jordi Savall, “is a real challenge for any interpreter, for the immense spiritual and esthetic dimension of this work and its perfect balance between virtuosity, emotion, purity and eloquence attains levels of musical language that are extreme and that situate it in the highest dimension , the most universal ever attained by man. This work summarizes the knowledge of a whole lifetime, in which the past (stile antico) and the present (barocco and galante) combine and allow us to perceive a musical language which is truly universal and transcendent.” The second DVD accompanying the recordings allows us to discover the performing artists, as well as an interview with Jordi Savall on, notably, the work of Bach.
