Ce premier volume consacré au pianiste italien Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli reprend son répertoire de prédilection dans lequel Maurice Ravel et Claude Debussy trouvèrent un idéal interprétatif inégalé. Michelangeli (1920 – 1995) commença le piano et le violon à 4ans, mais une maladie infantile le contraint à choisir le piano. Il rentre au conservatoire de Milan, puis remporte le premier prix au Concours international de Genève, avant de gagner une course automobile. Durant sa jeunesse Michelangeli fut un « intrépide ». Il devint à la fois champion de ski et pilote d’avion, puis il voyagea durant une dizaine d’années, notamment au Etats-Unis, avant d’enseigner à Brescia, lieu dans lequel il créera en 1964 un festival de piano réputé. Michelangeli devint alors « un pianiste énigmatique et lointain, capable d’interrompre un concert s’il ne se sent pas bien. Perfectionniste, au fait de toutes les techniques modernes, il sait monter et démonter son piano qu’il emmène partout avec lui ». Au programme donc de ce SACD stéréo uniquement, des œuvres de Ravel comme le célèbre Concerto pour piano en sol majeur, Gaspard de la nuit et les Valses nobles et sentimentales, ainsi que de Debussy avec Children’s corner. Enregistrées en public en 1952 et 1960 ces œuvres retrouvent une nouvelle jeunesse grâce au remastering DSD qui révèle des nuances jamais entendues sur support numérique. A thésauriser d’urgence….

This first volume devoted to the Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli highlights his favorite repertoire, Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy, who through his hands encountered unequaled interpretative perfection. Michelangeli (1920-1995) began studying the piano and the violin at the age of 4, but a childhood sickness forced him to choose the piano. He entered the Milan conservatory, then won the first prize of the Geneva international competition, before winning an auto race. During his youth, Michelangeli was “daring.” He became both a skiing champion and an airplane pilot, and then traveled for a dozen years, most notably in the United States, before teaching in Brescia, where in 1964 he created a prestigious piano festival. Michelangeli then became “an enigmatic and distant pianist, capable of interrupting a concert if he didn’t feel well. Perfectionist, aware of all modern techniques, he knew how to mount and dismount his piano, which he took everywhere with him. On the program of this SACD in stereo only are works by Ravel, such as the famous Concerto for Piano in G major, Gaspard de la nuit, and the Valses nobles et sentimentales, as well as the Children’s Corner by Debussy. Recorded in public in 1952 and 1960, these works are rejuvenated thanks to a DSD remastering which reflects nuances never heard on digital disc. A landmark recording to cherish…
