A l’écoute de cette interprétation de la symphonie n°4 d’Anton Bruckner, on se dit que cet enregistrement effectué au Herkulessal à Munich en 1983 n’a rien perdu de son souffle. Que l’on reproche ce que l’on veut au chef roumain, mais face à une telle interprétation, il est difficile de le traiter de petit chef. Et qui de nos jours peut encore avoir une telle vision d’une telle symphonie ? Celibidache, à l’instar de Gunther Wand, nous laisse pantois dès les premières notes, tenant son orchestre à la baguette si l’on ose dire. Il insuffle au Munich Philharmonic Orchestra une force et une démesure sidérantes. On ne saurait dire à quoi cela tient pour qu’un orchestre se transcende à ce point mais il y a sans aucun doute une énergie que l’on doit aussi en grande partie au chef. On regrette de ne plus entendre de tels concerts étant donné que l’envergure de tels chefs est tombée à plat de nos jours et que personne ne les remplace vraiment. Mais voilà, cette interprétation est une « preuve » pour qui aime les symphonies de Bruckner.

In listening to this interpretation of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony N°4, one must admit that this recording, done at the Herkulessal in Munich in 1983, has lost none of its power. Whatever one may reproach the Rumanian conductor, in front of such an interpretation, it is difficult to treat him as minor. And who today has such vision for such a symphony? Like Gunther Wand, Celibidachi, controlling his orchestra by the wand, if you will, leaves us speechless starting from the first notes. He breathes life into the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra with a force and immoderation that is astonishing. Who knows how an orchestra transcends itself to this degree? But there is no doubt whatsoever that it is in large part due to the conductor. It is regrettable that one can no longer hear such concerts today, when the oversize dimension of such conductors no longer exists and there is no one to replace them. But here you have it, this interpretation is “proof” for those who love Bruckner’s symphonies.
