Cette version de l’opéra de Britten a été enregistrée au Festival de Glyndebourne en 2010. La première version est en quatre actes ; une version révisée, plus ramassée, en deux actes a été créée le 9 janvier 1964. L’action se passe à bord du HMS Indomptable1 pendant la guerre entre le Royaume-Uni et la France révolutionnaire de 1797. Le navire de guerre s'achemine seul, au large des côtes françaises, pour rejoindre la flotte de la Méditerranée. Le livret est une adaptation d'Edward Morgan Forster et d'Eric Crozier, d’après la nouvelle éponyme d’Herman Melville. La figure du commandant Vere, était incarnée dans sa version initiale par Peter Pears. Parmi les recrues se trouve le marin Billy Budd, jeune, beau et fort, mais qui bégaie. Le maître d’équipage, John Claggart, reconnaît la valeur de ce jeune matelot et décide de le harceler. Cette fois-ci, l’opéra de Britten n’est pas dénaturé par des décors et tente de respecter une logique : nous sommes dans un navire anglais. De plus, sans forcer la comparaison avec la version de Britten et Pears, celle-ci s’en tire fort bien, grâce notamment à la grande qualité de l’interprétation et de l’orchestre, mené avec brio par Michael Grandage. A défaut de posséder le talent de la version Britten (on se la procure seulement en CD), voilà une interprétation en DVD qui brille par sa beauté et sa grandeur.

This version of the Britten opera was recorded at the 2010 Glyndebourne Festival. The first version was in four acts; a revised version, more concentrated, in two acts was premiered on January 9, 1964. The action takes place on board the HMS Indomitable during the war between the United Kingdom and revolutionary France in 1797. The war ship is sailing alone, along the French coast, in order to join the Mediterranean fleet. The book is an adaptation by Edward Morgan Forster and Eric Crozier, based on a short story of the same name by Herman Melville. The figure of Commander Vere was, in its initial version, played by Peter Pears. Among the recruits is the sailor Billy Budd, young, handsome, and strong, but who stutters. The crew master, John Claggart, recognizes the value of this young sailor and decides to harass him. This time, the Britten opera is not denatured by the sets, and tries to respect a certain logic: we are in a British ship. Moreover, without forcing the comparison with the Britten-Pears version, this version succeeds due to the high quality of orchestral interpretation lead with brio by Michael Grandage. Although not attaining the level of talent of the Britten version (available only in CD), here is a DVD interpretation which shines by its beauty and grandiosity.
