On ne présente plus Michel Legrand. Auteur-compositeur de musique de films (Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Les demoiselles de Rochefort, L’Affaire Thomas Crown, Un été 42), son domaine de prédilection est le jazz, apprécié des plus grands jazzmen (Miles Davis, Bill Evans et j’en passe). Il composa aussi la musique des chansons de Claude Nougaro et de tant d’autres personnalités. Enregistré en 2009 pour ses 77 ans, avec sa bonhomie, sa grande forme, son sourire et sa décontraction, Michel Legrand est en pleine possession de ses moyens. Cela en est impressionnant. On a l’impression qu’il ne vieillit pas. Léger, précis, enjoué, il parvient sans difficulté à ravir nos oreilles par un jazz en formation de big band qui swingue bien pendant une heure et demi. Certes, c’est parfois un peu trop complaisant (un peu trop spectacle pour tout dire) mais cela prend des chemins fugués avec Sylvain Luc mais hélas aussi avec des moments plus faibles avec la chanteuse Alison Moyet (apparition un peu ratée dans l’ensemble). Sans doute qu’on aurait préféré un Michel Legrand en plus petite formation, en quelque sorte plus intime. Quoiqu’il en soit, même s’il y a des moments creux, ce DVD fort sympathique en possède d’autres plus enthousiasmants, car il est difficile de se passer du jazz enjoué de Michel Legrand.

The author-composer of film music (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Demoiselles of Rochefort, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Summer of 42), his specialty is jazz, and is appreciated by the greatest jazzmen (Miles Davis, Bill Evans, and others). He also composed the music of songs by Claude Nougaro, and many other personalities. Recorded in 2009 to celebrate his 77th birthday, with his good nature, good health, smile and relaxed self, Michel Legrand is still going strong. Which is quite impressive. One gets the impression that he hasn’t gotten older. Light, precise, jovial, he manages with no trouble to delight our ears with a jazz in big band that swings for an hour and a half. For sure, he is sometimes somewhat self-indulging (a bit too showbiz, to be honest), but things take off with Sylvain Luc, but unfortunately there are weaker moments, such as Alison Moyet’s singing (an appearance that is not up to par on the whole). There is no denying one would have preferred a Michel Legrand on a smaller scale, more intimate. Still, even if there are some slack moments, this neat DVD has other moments which are exciting, for it is difficult to resist the lighthearted jazz of Michel Legrand.
