Ludwig Aloisius Minkus, called Leon Minkus, is an Austrian composer of ballet music, a virtuoso violinist, and a professor of violin. The Bayadere is a ballet in three acts and seven scenes choreographed by Marius Petipa. It was first performed on January 23, 1877 at the Kamenny Bolchoi Theatre in Saint Petersburg. The Bayadere tells the story of a “dancer” or “servant” of the temple Nikiya and the valorous warrior Solor who promise eternal fidelity to each other. The great Brahman, in love with Nikiya, learns of her relations with Solor. Dugmanta, rajah of Golconda, would like to marry Solor and his daughter Gamzatti-Hamsatti. Nikiya, but not knowing these goings on, accepts to dance on the occasion of the feasts celebrating their engagement. Jelous, the great Brahman confides to the rajah that the warrior avowed his love to the Bayadere before the sacred fire. Dugmanta, far from being angry at Solor, decides that if someone must die, it should be Nikiya… The sumptuous version by the Royal Ballet directed by Valeriv Ovsyanikov will be hard to beat on DVD: sumptuous sets, male and female dancers (Tamara Rojo, Carlos Acosta, Marianela Nunez) at their peak, everything here combines to make this a first-class DVD.
