On ne présente plus ou presque le célèbre baryton Dietrich Fischer Dieskau qui a œuvré notamment dans le domaine du lied au point de phagocyter bien souvent la discographie et d’imposer sa voix comme unique référence. Si je grossis le trait, c’est pour dire à quel point il a été important, trop sans doute au détriment d’autres chanteurs qui ne déméritent pas tant mais pour montrer aussi qu’il a été bien souvent exceptionnel aussi. Et pour juger sur pièce, voici ici les lieder de Robert Schumann. On peut regretter une image d’une qualité moyenne mais le spectacle est au rendez-vous. Fischer Dieskau reste même encore à cette époque un interprète d’excellence. Certes on peut lui reprocher un ton un petit peu froid, presque trop parfait et glacé qui m’a toujours un peu agacé pour son manque d’émotion ou le côté machine parfaite. Il n’empêche que la diction, le ton et la tessiture tournent parfois au « miracle » tellement Dietrich Fischer Dieskau connaît la « musique ». Agaçant parfois, sublime souvent. En supplément sur un autre DVD la Ballade Vom Haideknaben de Robert Schumann, Leonore et Der Traurige Mönch de Franz Liszt et enfin, surprise assez rare, Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christophe Rilke de Viktor Ullman. Un programme riche et complet.

Everyone today knows the celebrated baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, who most notably devoted himself to the lied, to the point of often overwhelming the discography and imposing his voice as the unique reference. This may be something of an exaggeration, but one which has a purpose: for, he has indeed been important, perhaps too important, and thereby a detriment to other singers who didn’t deserve to be neglected. But, also an exaggeration that shows how exceptional a singer he was too. And if one wants to judge by the goods, here are lieder by Robert Schumann. The so-so quality of the image is to be regretted, but the spectacle is rich. Fischer Dieskau remains, even at the date of this recording, an excellent interpreter. No doubt, one can criticize his tone as being a little bit cold, almost too perfect and glacial, which has always struck me as lacking emotion in its machine-like perfection. Still, Dietrich Fischer Dieskau knows this music so well that his diction, tone and texture are often a miracle. Sometimes he is annoying, often sublime. As a bonus on another DVD, the Balade Vom Haideknaben by Robert Schumann, Leonore and Der Traurige Mönch by Franz Liszt, and finally – a rare surprise: Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Chrisophe Rilke byViktor Ullman. A rich and full program.
