Musique à programme s’il en fut, la Symphonie Fantastique de Hector Berlioz est l’un des deux chefs-d’œuvre absolus de son auteur avec La Damnation de Faust. Mais l’œuvre est également visionnaire, voire doublement visionnaire, puisqu’elle développe une orchestration quasi unique pour son époque et qu’elle délivre un contenu qui ne l’est pas moins, comme le souligne Ronald Vermeulen dans son texte introductif à l’enregistrement : « Avec la Symphonie Fantastique, Berlioz annonce l’ère de la musique orchestrale romantique. Pour la première fois, une symphonie est présentée au public en combinaison avec un programme imprimé dans lequel « l’histoire » de la musique est décrite « comme le texte parlé d’un opéra, servant à amener des morceaux de musique, dont il motive le caractère et l’expression » ». A la tête de son orchestre américain, Marek Janowski nous donne à entendre ici ce qui peut être considéré comme l’un de ses meilleurs disques. Dans un discours musical à l’équilibre parfait, tout respire avec naturel et précision au cœur même d’un tempo mesuré et rigoureux. L’œuvre est pensée d’un bout à l’autre de la partition et cela s’entend à chaque mesure. Un SACD à découvrir absolument avec en complément l’exceptionnelle ouverture Le Roi Lear.

Program music it may be, but Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique is one of the two absolute masterpieces by the composer of The Damnation of Faust. But the work is also visionary, even doubly visionary, in that it not only develops a quasi-unique orchestration for its time, but delivers content that is no less visionary. As Ronald Vermeulen states in his introductory text for the recording: “With the Symphonie Fantastique, Berlioz announced the era of romantic orchestral music. For the first time, a symphony was presented to the public along with a printed program in which “the story” of the music was described “as the spoken text of an opera, serving to present the musical pieces, whose character and expression he [found] the motivation for.” Conducting his American orchestra, Marek Janowski offers us here what could be considered one of his best recordings. In a perfectly balanced musical discourse, all here breathes naturally and precisely based on an appropriate and rigorous tempo. The work has been thought out from beginning to end of the score, and it shows at each measure. Here is an SACD to discover without further ado, with the exceptional overture The King Lear as a compliment to the program.
