Le label MDG poursuit son exploration de l’univers musical du compositeur suisse Frank Martin (1890-1974), avec au programme de ce Super Audio CD, la Suite tirée de l’opéra « La Tempête » pour baryton et orchestre, les Six Monologues d’après « Jedermann » sur des textes de Hugo von Hoffmannsthal, ainsi que la Symphonie Concertante en deux mouvements. « Comme un grand nombre de ses compatriotes, précise Paul Griffiths, Frank Martin reflète dans son art le double héritage culturel de la Suisse. La très forte influence germanique qu’il a subie n’est pas celle de Schoenberg, mais celle de Bach. D’autre part, ses sonorités évoquent souvent Debussy, Ravel ou Roussel et il a surtout adopté des textes et des titres français. Le résultat de cette fusion est une synthèse très personnelle d’esthétique et de sensualité ». Saluons donc la prestation du Baryton Thomas Oliemans au timbre chaleureux, ainsi que Steven Sloane dirigeant le Stavanger Symphonie Orchestra pour cet enregistrement essentiel dans lequel domine le chef-d’œuvre des Six Monologues.

The label MDG continues to explore the musical universe of the Suisse composer Frank Martin (1890-1974), with this Super Audio CD on which can be heard the Suite from the opera “The Tempest,” for baritone and orchestra, the Six Monologues based on “Jedermann,” with texts by Hugo von Hoffmannsthal, as well as the Concerto Symphony in Two Movements. “Like many of his compatriots,” states Paul Griffiths, “Frank Martin, in his art, is a reflection of the double cultural heritage of Switzerland. The very strong German influence he felt is not that of Schoenberg, but that of Bach. Furthermore, his harmonics often evoke Debussy, Ravel or Roussel, and he above all adopted French texts and works. The result of this fusion is a very personal synthesis of esthetics and sensuality.” Baritone Thomas Oliemans, with his warm tones, deserves praise, as does Steven Sloane, who has directed the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in this essential recording on which the masterpiece that is the Six Monologues shines high and bright.
