Cette petite anthologie de musique pour orchestre intitulée « The Sound of Sibelius » est une véritable aubaine, tant au niveau interprétatif qu’au niveau sonore. En effet, c’est bien l’enregistrement moderne de la musique du maître d’Ainola qui s’impose ici dans une prise de son exemplaire d’aération, de finesse de timbres et de présence. Car comme l’a écrit Marc Vignal dans son remarquable ouvrage dédié au compositeur finlandais paru aux éditions Fayard : « Eloignée de toute obstination doctrinale, la musique de Sibelius est la moins autoritaire qui soit. Elle ne semble même pas ce qu’elle est. Œuvre profondément mélancolique, elle dégage de certains de ses thèmes un sentiment qui semble austère, voire frugal, et qui peut même paraitre simplement bucolique à ceux qui confondent la surface d’une chose et sa dimension. Elle ne possède aucune vertu astreignant l’écoute, tant elle semble se défaire elle-même de toute intention didactique. Il n’y a rien à prendre chez Sibelius, car il donne tout ». Le Lahti Symphony Orchestra que dirige Osmo Vanska offre les couleurs idéales à ces œuvres uniques. Le programme copieux du SACD (près de 80 minutes) propose donc « Karelia Suite » Op.11, « The Wood Nymph » Op.15, « The Swan of Tuonela » Op. 22 N°2, « Lemminkaïnen’s Return » Op. 22 N°4, « Spring Song » Op.16, « Valse Triste » Op.44 N°1, « Scene with Cranes » Op.44 N°2, et pour finir, « Finlandia » Op.26. A saisir sans hésitation aucune.

This small anthology of orchestral music, entitled “The Sound of Sibelius,” is a real godsend, both interpretatively and sonically. Indeed, here is a modern recording of the Ainola master’s music that predominates all others, for here is a sound recording that is exemplary in its aeration, tonal finesse, and presence. For, as Marc Vignal wrote in his remarkable work published by Fayard devoted to the Finnish composer, “Removed from all doctrinal obstinacy, Sibelius’ music is the least authoritarian of them all. It does not even seem to be what it is. Profoundly melancholic, some of the themes in his work give off a feeling that can seem austere, even frugal, and can even appear to be simply bucolic to those who confuse surface with dimension. Nothing in it constrains the listening pleasure, as it distances itself from any didactic intent. Sibelius gives us nothing more than his all.” The Lahti Symphony Orchestra, directed by Osmo Vanska, supplies ideal colors to these unique works. The copious program on this SACD (nearly 80 minutes) includes “Karelia Suite” Op.11, “The Wood Nymph” Op.15, “The Swan of Tuonela” Op.22 N°2, “Lemminkaïnen’s Return” Op.22 N°4, “Spring Song” Op. 16, “Valse Triste” Op.44 N°1, “Scene with Cranes” Op.44 N°2, and to conclude, “Finlandia” Op.26.
