Cello Sonatas Op. 21, 63, 72. String Trio Op. 48 (world premiere)

Neglected in the west, the Russian composer of Polish origin Mieczyslaw Weinberg or Vainberg (1919-1996) is nonetheless the author of an important catalog of five hundred works, among which twenty-two symphonies, seventeen string quartets, orchestral suites, piano sonatas, seven operas, one hundred fifty melodies, as well as film music, including that of "Quand Passent les Cigognes", Palme d'Or in Cannes in 1958. Close to Dimitri Chostakovitch , who asked to work with him after having heard Weinberg's first symphony, composed in 1942 and dedicated to the red army, Wainberg became a friend of the composer of Lady Macbeth, and played the reduction of the latter's Tenth Symphony with him on two pianos. The program of this remarkable recording is devoted to the Sonatas for Cello and Piano N°1 in C major Op.21 dating from 1945, N°2 in G minor Op.63 from 1959, as well as the String Trio Op.48 dating from 1950, here recorded for the first time, and the Sonata for Cello alone N°1 Op.72 from 1960. In listening to these works, we cannot but agree with Pierre-Emile Barbier when he affirms that Wainberg is "the third greatest Russian composer of the twentieth century, following Prokofiev and Chostakovitch." Once again, celloist Michal Kanka's playing, both warm and captivating, is wonderful. With rare zeal wherein virtuosity becomes passion, he transcends a profound musical discourse, well accompanied by pianist Miguel Borges Coelho and the two other members of the Beethoven Trio, Pavel Hula on the violin and Josef Kluson on the alto. No need to beat about the bush before such artistic accomplishment: the work on this pure DSD Super Audio CD is one of the most important Russian pieces of chamber music of the last century.
