Antonin Dvorak composed this requiem in 1890 at the beginning of his creative apogee. It was first performed on October 9, 1891 in Birmingham, and for the occasion the composer himself conducted. In this version dating from 1993, given at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, there are exceptional interpreters such as Lucia Popp, Eva Randova, Joseph Protschka, and Peter Mikulas. Needless to say, it would be difficult to equal other versions released on disc, most notably the unforgettable one by conductor Karel Ancerl in 1959 (Supraphon) with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, or the one conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch with the same orchestra and such singers as Gabriela Benackova, Brigitte Fassbaender, and Thomas Moser. Let us also not forget the wonderful version by the London Symphony Orchestra, directed by Istvan Kertesz (Decca) with Pilar Lorengar, Erzsebet Komolossy, Robert Ilosfalvy, and Tom Krause. All of these are unsurpassable, attaining something close to perfection. Pavel Kuhn makes his case with gusto, and the Prague Symphony Orchestra performs quite well. Here is a highly respectable version that does honor to magnificent voices, even if some are no longer what they used to be. In any case, this is a DVD to discover, at the very least because of its rarity.
