Avec le même orchestre danois et un chef d’orchestre plus connu cette fois-ci, rien moins que Leopold Stokowski, en 1967, nous assistons à l’interprétation de la symphonie N°2 du compositeur Carl Nielsen (1865-1911). Ce dernier partage avec Edvard Grieg et Jean Sibelius la renommée des compositeurs scandinaves. Composée en 1902, et intitulée « Les quatre tempéraments », cette œuvre semble inspirer Stokowski et l’orchestre danois, sans doute rodé par la présence de l’œuvre dans le pays (ce qui peut ne pas être évidemment le cas), mais nous tenons là une remarquable version de cette symphonie. Malgré un son mono un peu étriqué, Leopold Stokowski, insuffle à cette œuvre dynamisme, vivacité et clarté. L’orchestre est littéralement transcendé par la direction du chef, impressionnant de rigueur et d’autorité. Le tout est dirigé d’une main de fer. C’est sans doute l’occasion pour les passionnés de Nielsen et Stokowski, de découvrir une interprétation rare et précieuse. Dommage que le DVD soit un peu court…

With the same Danish orchestra and a better known conductor this time around, none other than Leopold Stokowski in 1967, we can here attend an interpretation of the Symphony N°2 by composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1911), who, like Edvard Grieg and Jean Sibelius, was Scandinavian. Composed in 1902, and called “The Four Temperaments”, this work seems to inspire Stokowski and the Danish orchestra, no doubt well-practiced by the presence of the work in the county (which obviously is not always the case), but this is a remarkable version of this symphony. Despite mono sound that is somewhat scant, Leopold Stokowski gives dynamics, vivacity and clarity to the work. The orchestra, which he leads with an iron hand, is literally transcended by his conducting, which is impressive for its rigor and authority. Without a doubt, here is an opportunity for fans of Nielsen and Stokowski to discover a rare and priceless interpretation. Unfortunately, the DVD is a little short…
